NGINX Launches New NGINX Application Platform
September 11, 2017

NGINX announced the launch of several new products to form the foundation of the new NGINX Application Platform.

Offering a complete application deployment and delivery suite, the NGINX Application Platform enables teams to build or modernize applications with the most efficient DevOps tools and best practices, including cloud, containers, and microservices. The platform lets businesses innovate safely, while maintaining the performance, reliability, security, and scale necessary to support their users.

The NGINX Application Platform is a suite of products, built on open source technology, that together will help organizations offer faster, more capable, and more robust web applications to a broader, truly global audience. By combining application delivery, an application server, and comprehensive, policy-driven management and monitoring into one solution, the platform provides a number of key benefits to businesses, including added agility, stability, governance, and visibility.

The platform is comprised of:

- NGINX Plus, a combined load balancer, content cache, and web server. NGINX Plus extends open source NGINX with advanced features and award-winning support for an enterprise-ready solution. Hundreds of enterprise customers already rely on NGINX Plus to ensure their applications are delivered without downtime or delay.

- NGINX Controller, a centralized management and monitoring platform for NGINX Plus. It orchestrates the delivery of applications across multiple environments, enabling companies to continuously deploy and update applications using tested and proven policies. From a "single pane of glass," organizations can see how traffic is being routed through all NGINX Plus instances, and define and execute policies that control how NGINX Plus performs load balancing, content caching, and other key application delivery functions.

- NGINX Unit, an application server that supports PHP, Python, and Go, with more language support coming soon. With increasing adoption of microservices, organizations are deploying new features and functionality more frequently. Current application servers designed for static monolithic environments struggle to keep up. NGINX Unit is a new, lightweight application server built for modern apps. Its revolutionary design lets organizations run multiple applications written in different languages and language versions on the same server. Service disruptions can be avoided with seamless application updates. For building a service mesh, NGINX Unit is the foundational building block. Just like the NGINX web server, NGINX Unit is open source.

- The NGINX Web Application Firewall (WAF), powered by ModSecurity, which protects web applications against various Layer 7 attacks and provides DDoS mitigation, real-time blacklisting, and audit logging. This was first introduced as part of NGINX Plus Release 12 in May 2017.

“The integration of technology into our day-to-day lives has provided enterprises with an opportunity to reach a broader audience and customer-base than ever before,” said Gus Robertson, CEO of NGINX, Inc. “Organizations that have been the most successful at tapping into this potential have one thing in common – a modern, agile technology stack built on open source software, starting with NGINX at the center. With a complete application platform that optimizes the performance and reliability of applications, these businesses can innovate for the long-term with extraordinary new products delivered at a breakneck pace.”

In addition to launching the NGINX Application Platform, NGINX has added the ability to use NGINX Plus as a Kubernetes Ingress Controller. Based on the open source NGINX Ingress Controller for Kubernetes, this new feature of NGINX Plus empowers organizations to deploy applications within Kubernetes and Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform anywhere across a cluster so they can be reached by outside traffic.
