Weavework announced the general availability of Weave Cloud, a software-as-a-service that allows DevOps teams to connect, monitor and deploy containers and microservices to accelerate the delivery of cloud-native applications.
“Adopting containers and microservices can be difficult for development teams, requiring them to select an orchestrator and scheduler, all while wiring these up with networking, security, monitoring and troubleshooting,” said Jeff Byrne, Senior Analyst at Taneja Group. “With Weave Cloud, Weaveworks is providing a solution that accelerates development, replacing manual configuration and scripting with automation, and providing all the container and orchestrator-level information needed.”
The capabilities of Weave Cloud build on hosted multi-tenant versions of Weaveworks’ open source projects, Net, Scope, Flux, and Cortex. Key benefits of Weave Cloud include:
- Monitor containers, orchestrators and applications: Weave Cloud includes a real-time map of an application and its communication, and Prometheus monitoring as a service. DevOps teams can immediately understand their application and use sophisticated queries on the metrics database to understand and troubleshoot problems in containerized applications. No coding is required by developers to collect and store baseline metrics from the infrastructure, and they can provide custom metrics from their application with just a few lines of code.
- Connect and secure container clusters and applications: DevOps teams require a simple way to wire up applications with built-in service discovery and network-level security between containers and microservices, while having this work across clouds, datacenters and orchestrators. Weave Cloud provides visualization, monitoring and management of container networks built using Weave Net, while also enabling the isolation of services and containers, as well as firewall traffic to reduce the attack surface.
- Continuous microservice delivery: Weave Cloud automates the tedious and error-prone steps to go from a new set of container images to a properly deployed service. Platform teams define a policy that describes how the service should be run, and Weave Cloud automatically generates the right configuration files, checks them into source code control, and (optionally) deploys them.
"Weaveworks makes cloud native applications easy and fast for everyone," said Alexis Richardson, Co-Founder and CEO of Weaveworks. "Developers don't want big platforms, they want simplicity and prefer using open source and SaaS. Weave Cloud is a dead simple SaaS offering that lets developers pick and mix extensions to their choice of orchestration platform. Whether they need Prometheus monitoring, continuous deployment, firewall management or troubleshooting, Weave Cloud is the solution.”
